To be considered at the State Convention

Knights of Columbus OREGON STATE COUNCIL January 31, 2015 Subject: EXPENSE REIMBURSEMENT FOR DISTRICT WARDENS The following resolution was submitted and proposed by the Oregon State Council Officers for consideration at the 2015 State Meeting in Newport, OR: WHEREAS, the District Deputy has been appointed to provide leadership to the councils in his assigned district. Through his example of faith, charity and good judgment, he provides guidance for council officers in his district to follow; and, WHEREAS, the District Deputy is encouraged to attend all State Meetings and to acquire the latest tools and information to help him lead his councils to succeed; and, WHEREAS, a District Deputy is often encouraged to appoint a District Warden to aid him in his duties as District Deputy; and, WHEREAS, in the absence of the District Deputy, many Jurisdictions would advocate to have the District Warden be the district representative for his assigned district, rather than leave the position vacant during these most important state business sessions; now, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus will allow additional expense reimbursement for the District Warden during State Meetings and only when the District Deputy is unable to attend the said State Meeting; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that District Warden reimbursement would be limited to, transportation, hotel and meals at the same rate as defined by the Supreme Council for the District Deputy, and be reported on the District Deputy expense report; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this additional reimbursement in no way shall diminish or replace the important role of the District Deputy as recognized by the State and Supreme Councils. Respectfully submitted by the Oregon State Knights of Columbus Council Officers, Robert J. Kish Jr., State Deputy Rev. Theodore Lange, State Chaplain Patrick L. Rice, Immediate Past State Deputy Sid Thiel, State Secretary Francis Mohr, State Treasurer Ronald J. Boyce, State Advocate Steve Steele, State Warden

From the State Membership Director

February and March State Contest:
Spring into COH
Your chance to compete against yourself and catch up on your quest for Circle of Honor.
Get 20% or more of the quota in these two months and win prizes as long as you are net/net positive at the end of the two month period. Get 10% or more of the quota in February and win a bonus:
Reach 10% Goal
by Feb. 28 (20% bonus)
Divisions I and II: $1,000 Bonus: $200
Divisions III and IV: $750 Bonus: $150
Divisions V and VI: $500 Bonus: $100

--------------

My brothers, we would have to be net/net to get this. This means we'd have to basically find one man in February and one man in March to bring into our council. I believe we're so small we're Division VI, but that could be $600 for our coffers. If you know anybody, let me know and we'll either get them to degrees in Sherwood on February 21, or we will hold a St. Patrick's Day/Venerable Fr. McGivney Founder's Month 1st Degree on March 16.

Fraternal Survey has been turned in

Your Grand Knight has been sick, so I gave it a few extra days. In the end, we had to extrapolate from an extremely small sample- only 20% of our council responded to the survey, despite repeated calls to respond. However, based on an extrapolation from there, as well as using the records I had of events we did, we more than doubled the amount of charitable work and giving we did in 2014 over 2013. Your council gave over $3000 to charity (a big boost was from the Baby Bottle drives at St. John Fisher and St. Clare's) and together, you gave over 4000 hours of volunteer work. Congratulations on a great year, John Clare Council!

A Chance to see the 3rd Degree, from the best team in the State

There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd Degree offered February 21st at St Francis in Sherwood. This is an excellent chance to either get your remaining degrees for being an officer in our council, or to witness the beauty and lessons of our degrees once again.

This is also a rare opportunity to get all three degrees in one day, so if you have any recruits, let me know. 1st Degree Registration will be at 9am, followed by the 1st degree at 9:30.

Virtual Pass The Hat

At the meeting last night, if you were there, you would know we passed the hat for James Michael Morgan, raising $84 to help him with the costs of his double lung transplant. We will continue doing this every meeting until we get his crowdfunding page funded.

I'd like to start a virtual passing of the hat as well. Please copy the following into your favorite social media accounts:

Our friend James Michael Morgan just went through a double lung transplant. He needs help with expenses. You can give, through this 501c3 crowdfunding link: https://m.helphopelive.org/campaign/5914 . Please share this link with all of your friends, even if you can't give yourself.

Kissmet

As some of you know, your Grand Knight and Warden are extremely involved in the Archdiocese Office of People with Disabilities- so much so that we go to the Special Needs Mass at St. Rose of Lima every 2nd Sunday of the Month.

On the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, Your Grand Knight Theodore Seeber, and our Warden Michael Chau went to St. Rose of Lima as normal for the Special Needs Mass, but we had a surprise. The regular priest, Fr. Matt, was on retreat and our Oregon State Chaplain, Fr. Theo Lange, was filling in! As a part of the special needs Mass, we act out the Gospel, and the priest generally mimes the part of Christ. The picture above is of Fr Theo being baptised by Paul, one of the special needs men who was playing the part of John the Baptist.

Dear Brothers

We finally have date and time details as to the Rosary and Funeral Mass for our dear deceased Brother, Dick Paradis.  The Rosary will be on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.  January 16, 2015 at St Mary's Catholic Church. The funeral will be on Saturday morning the 17th, at St. Mary's again with Mass at 10:30 followed by a reception in the gym.   St. Mary's address is  501 Northwest 25th Street, Corvallis, OR 97330.   Please plan on arriving at least 45 minutes early if you will be participating in the Honor Guard.  All are welcome, all are encouraged, to attend.  Dick was a true friend and mentor to many of us.  He will be missed in so many different ways.

Sir Knight Tom Smith passed away last week.  He was an active member in both the 3rd and 4th degrees at St. Pius X Church.  He was also District Deputy before DD Steve Purvis. His funeral will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Cedar Mill, 1:00 PM, January 14.  An Honor Guard has been requested.  Saint Pius X Parish is at 1280 NW Saltzman Road, Portland, OR 97229.

Important Links

A conversation at Pastoral Council two nights ago made me realize how unaware those of us older than 40 are of our parish's involvement in cyberspace. To that end, I offer the following three links:
Home Parish of the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roundtable
Home Parish of the Saint John Fisher Roundtable
Home Parish of Council 15485

I strongly suggest you bookmark all three. It's quite clear that the three parishes have taken three different routes for web site design- St Elizabeth of Hungary somehow seems older, less updated; St. John Fisher seems to be an in house homebrew with a very active webmaster; St. Clare's contracts out most of the work to Our Sunday Visitor except for what Laurie Z writes, and has links to fascinating articles and regular columns. All three have recent bulletin links, and some even record homilies. Well worth your time to explore.

Text from Rose on Mike Morgan

Mike is in stable condition. He is breathing on his own. Still a little drowsy from pain meds, but was eating a little breakfast when I called. Keep praying for his recovery!

-----5pm update-----

So far so good, he was able to sit up a short time today. Looking pretty good, considering.

There is still a need, if anybody has the time and wants a paid vacation in Seattle, for a nighttime person to be in the apartment with Mike as he recovers over the next two to three months. If you are currently retired or unemployed, please consider this corporal work of mercy. There is no liability and the only duty is to call 911 if an emergency occurs.

James Michael Morgan is in for lung surgery

And needs your prayers and help. Click here to donate to his cause. He is in Room 5310 at University of Washington Medical Center.

---------UPDATE----------------------

He began surgery at 9:30AM on January 4, 2014, it is expected that the surgery will take 6 to 8 hours. I do not expect to hear anything more until after 6pm.

------------Update 2, 3:30pm January 4---------

Mike Morgan is out of surgery and is in recovery, says a text message from Rozanne McMillan, Mike's "best friend" and ex wife who is in the waiting room.

Update 5pm-----------

Mike Morgan is out of recovery and in his room, on a ventilator, they'll probably try to take that out tonight or tomorrow morning. Might be a while before he's up to talking, but I'm sure gifts sent to his room and donations to his page would be greatly appreciated.

Update Jan 5, 2015, 9:15 AM------------------
Mike is resting but in a lot of pain. They gave him an epidural in his chest cavity to numb the pain along with the pain meds. Other than that, he's doing OK. Not quite ready to get off the ventilator yet. Next update later this afternoon.

Called to Protect class canceled

The Called to Protect Class for January 3rd has been canceled at the last minute. Of the two Knights who committed to go to this class, one is sick, and the other, our dear Trustee friend James Michael Morgan, we thought would be getting new lungs, but the lungs they had were not fit for transplant. Please continue to pray for James Michael Morgan.
