Children Of God for Life

A recent video from Fr. Mark Goring, CC on Youtube was his Holy Family Sunday homily- on the tendency of the pharmaceutical industry to taint their research with fetal tissue. This led to the link to campaign of Children of God For Life, a Catholic organization currently asking for signatures on their campaign to end the use of aborted children in research.

A wonderful video from Supreme

We must plan on starting our next fraternal year, with some sort of Council Picnic that we invite everybody in both parishes to. August 13 is the feast day of Blessed Father Michael J. McGivney. This year, this falls on a Saturday.

From the State Council

The Archdiocese of Portland & Diocese of Baker with the help from the Knights of Columbus Councils
As part of the Eucharistic Revival called for by the U.S. Bishops, Archbishop Alexander K. Sample, Bishop Liam Cary, and the Oregon Knights of Columbus are asking that every Catholic Church in Oregon try to hold an Hour of Eucharistic Adoration. The State Council is asking every local council in Oregon to support and assist with publicity and scheduling for this event, and for the membership to fully participate. The primary focus of the event is for divine guidance for the Synodal process called for by Pope Francis. We also pray for a deeper understanding of the dignity and sacredness of human life from conception to natural death and for a renewed spirit and light for all parishes and parishioners in the Portland and Baker Dioceses.

My brothers, I believe we can organize this.

Scam warning

I got a phone call from a brother Knight at Tigard about yet another fake FrDonGutman account at gmail (yes, misspelled and all) so I thought it was time to put out this warning from a lawyer I watch on Youtube. NEVER buy gift cards for charity unless you are handing them over to an approved drive at the Church.

A Basket of Hope and Mother And Child, Missouri and Portland Fundraiser

Shannon Seeber is teaming with us to do a socially distanced fundraiser for two organizations- Mother and Child Education Center, and a Missouri-based charity called A Basket of Hope.

We all need HOPE in our lives. As we enter into this holiday season, Shannon will donate $10 to Mother+Child Education Center for every necklace sold.

We are all familiar with Mother And Child- which provides education and connections to services for women in crisis pregnancies.

A Basket of Hope is a new charity to us, they work with Ronald McDonald houses to provide a gift basket to children dealing with that very scary moment of a childhood cancer diagnosis.

If you buy this necklace for either a loved one, or to donate to Mother and Child for a mother who needs some hope, $10 will be donated to A Basket of Hope, and $10 will be donated to Mother and Child Education Center.

A second Hope Necklace purchased through this program, will be included in a basket for A Basket of Hope.

Hope Necklace $32

Venmo Shannon to order the necklace for $32 and tell her if you want it delivered to you, or delivered to Mother and Child Education Center.

You can also sponsor a woman by just sending $32 for the necklace and Shannon will give that necklace to Mother and Child Education Center to one of the women there that they are assisting--this daily reminder that there is hope--so they get the necklace and the organization will get the $10!

From Brother Tom Owens- Help needed

HELP NEEDED

As you probably already know Tom Owens’ son, Bob, died recently in a car crash. Tom will be removing Bob’s items from a Portland self-storage facility on Monday Nov 22nd from about 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Tom has already had the fantastic help of Brothers Michael Chau and Oanh Nguyen in organizing the ‘stuff’ in the unit. He could use the help of a few additional Knights on Monday Nov. 22nd to remove items from storage unit and take them for donation or to the dump. He is planning on renting a U Haul truck to move the items unless one of you already has a truck they would be willing to use. If available to help, please contact Tom at tomrowens@msn.com or 503.789.7313 for storage facility location and other details.

GIFT CARD CAMPAIGN FOR WARM SPRINGS RESERVATION

Sponsored by the St. Clare Peace and Justice Committee

Last fall, our St. Clare Parish Community hosted a water and food drive for the Warm Springs Reservation and provided their community with over 20,000 pounds of food and water. The donations from St. Clare made a real impact on the families of Warm Springs. We would like to help with these needs again this year. Warm Springs is still experiencing many challenges accessing clean water, and this year has been magnified by the Delta Variant and many members in quarantine with COVID. This year, the St. Clare Peace and Justice Committee is requesting gift cards from Safeway or Fred Meyer. With the money collected, Lynnette Howes and her team will purchase clean water in Madras, OR to deliver to Warm Springs. Throughout the month of October, please bring gift cards or monetary donations in an envelope labeled for Warm Springs to the collection basket at church or the drop slot on the front porch of the parish office. If you are sending a check, make it payable to St. Clare Church with Warm Springs written on the memo line. Every gift counts and no amount is too large or small. Thank you for your contributions and continued prayers for our brothers and sisters in Warm Springs.

I Heard God Laugh - Part 5 (Preparation for Next KofC Meeting Sept 21st)

Hello Knights,

We had another terrific discussion last KofC meeting on the book I Heard God Laugh. This book is a guide to help us encounter God in a powerful way and to help us start a habit of daily prayer.

We will be wrap up our discussion at our next meeting (Tuesday Sept 21st) with the final Part 5 - The God Who Gave Us Laughter. For those that do not have the book, you can click HERE and download a scanned PDF of Part 5.

Here are some possible discussion questions that have been recommended for you to think on as you read the 5th and final Part:

Question 1: Matthew says in the book “The more we get to know God, the more we desire to know him.” Have you experienced that since we started this journey together? Can you think of a specific moment in this journey?

Question 2: Matthew talks about how he decides what events and commitments to participate in. Do you have a way of discerning what to be involved with? Or do you say yes to every opportunity? Do you feel pressured into doing things? Do you feel like you have the freedom to say no?

Question 3: How are you doing with your daily habit of prayer? What graces have you received? What obstacles have you overcome? What obstacles may you encounter on the road that you can prepare for now that you have read this book?

Catholic Vote Edify Videos

CatholicVote is starting a new YouTube channel called edify. To promote it, they are running a free sweepstakes gathering addresses and email addresses. We could win $10,000 for our council, but more importantly, this is a way to get the information out to the iGen generation who lives on the internet.

SIGN UP AND GET AN ENTRY HERE. REFER TO OUR COUNCIL, Knights of Columbus 16485, and our blog address, http://kofc15485.blogspot.com, to enter the sweepstakes.

What’s a Catholic supposed to think about Critical Race Theory?

Immigration? Gun control? Transgender “rights”?

Coming later this month, CV is proud to announce the launch of EDIFY — one of our biggest initiatives yet. EDIFY is a new comprehensive digital learning platform, designed to deliver answers to tough questions — all grounded in the teachings of the Catholic Church.

EDIFY will do this with brief and engaging videos featuring experts from across the country. And EDIFY will deliver the answers you are looking for in 5-minutes or less. You can share these videos with everyone you know. Think PragerU for Catholics.

To help spread the news about EDIFY to every Catholic in America, we created a little competition for you.

Generous supporters of CV have made possible a $10,000 grant, to be awarded to the top parish, school, or Catholic organization with the highest number of new EDIFY subscribers. Every new person who signs up for EDIFY content can vote for their favorite parish, school, or organization.

If your parish, school, or organization gets the most votes, it will win $10,000!

It’s super simple. Just add your name and choose your favorite parish or org.

Even if you are already a CV subscriber, you need to sign up to become an EDIFY fan. This will allow us to tally your vote for the parish, school or organization of your choice.

But most importantly -- be sure to spread the word to get as many people as possible to sign up and tell us what parish, school or organization could use $10,000 the most (all entries must be 501c3 qualified charities).

I can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on.

Please keep this project in your prayers as we prepare to launch in the coming weeks.

And don't forget to submit your vote!

From our Field Agent

I do not think we have any members left in Washington, but I'm passing this along to introduce Todd Lincoln, our new field agent.

Good Morning Theodore,

Washington States Long Term Care OPT OUT window is closing. The new .58% tax on employee's payroll deadline is upon us. Underwriting takes one and a half months from start to finish. Choices are few and last minute applications are slowing down the process

The State's plan is not portable - if you move from the state you cannot take your money with you. If you work in Washington and live in another state, you pay the tax but are not eligible for benefits. If you live in Washington and work in another state, you will still be taxed. And you are not eligible to receive benefits until vested for ten years of contribution nor are they guarantee by the state.

According to the Washington Department of Social and Health Services http://www.wacaresfund.wa.gov/

UPDATE: Not Aware of the Washington State Long-Term Care Program? - Employers Take Notice and Act Quickly | Employment Advisor | Davis Wright Tremaine (dwt.com)

Your Knights of Columbus is still accepting applications and is a simple solution for LTC coverage. Choice: Pay the state, pay to a competitor or work with the KNIGHTS of COLUMBUS.

Why we need to be pro-life on Euthanasia as well

I try not to be political or partisan in the Knights, but a new movement is starting that was pointed out to me by a friend- and the story attached to why this new movement is starting, is a horrific situation that any of us could find ourselves in.

Oregon Goodness In Medicine is a new group that isn't Catholic, but that we might consider supporting. They oppose bullying from the medical industry and euthanasia in particular. Click the link to read the story of Catherine Larson- a quadriplegic talked into "Death with dignity" by a hospital in Corvallis.

St. Vincent de Paul Requesting Knights Assistance

Hello Knights,

Mary Bunday with St. Clare's St. Vincent de Paul has reached to our Council for assistance. There is a family that needs furniture and another family that is donating furniture (Dresser & 3 Chairs).

They are looking for manpower to assist moving the furniture. Mike Devlin will be coordinating and using his truck to facilitate the move. Luckily, the locations are near each other and our Council. Pick up location for the Dresser is in Garden Home and the 3 Chairs are at St. Clair. Drop off is at Stephens Creek Crossing (SW 26th Ave & SW Vermont St).

If you are interesting in volunteering, please contact Mike Devlin (info below). They are flexible on the day / time. Once we have our volunteers, we will work this out. Sooner the better.

Thank you,

Mike Devlin

Call for Used Laptops and/or Printers in Good Working Order

Hello Brother Knights,

Tom Owens informed us last night at our Council Meeting about two low income Vietnamese men who are each in need of a used laptop computer and a printer. They are each attending PCC to improve their English and gain job skills. Tom Owens is serving as their Representative. We are asking our fellow Knights to consider them if they (or others they know) have a used laptop and/or printer in good working order that they would be willing to donate to these men.

Anyone having such items can contact Tom Owens at 503.789.7313 or tomrowens@msn.com to arrange to bring them over to his apartment, 5450 SW Erickson Ave. Apt B 308, Beaverton, OR 97005 or to arrange for him to pick them up at your house.

Thank you for your consideration.

To Navigate Pandemic Life, Adopt a Pilgrimage Mindset

Hi,

I just read this article in next month’s US Catholic magazine and was impressed with the theme and applicability of his ideas to new directions for our churches. Thought you might find it insightful. The ‘pilgrim’ theme is one our St. Clare Knights of Columbus monthly Zoom meeting agenda items last night of discussing sections of Matthew Kelly’s book, “I Heard God Laugh”.

I Heard God Laugh - Part 4 (Preparation for Next KofC Meeting Aug 17th)

Hello Knights,

I heard that you had another terrific discussion led by Gene at the last KofC meeting on the book I Heard God Laugh. This book is a guide to help us encounter God in a powerful way and to help us start a habit of daily prayer.

We will be continuing our discussion at our next meeting (Tuesday Aug 17th) with Part 4 - Six Powerful Spiritual Lessons. For those that do not have the book, you can click HERE and download a scanned PDF of Part 4.

Here are some possible discussion questions that have been recommended for you to think on as you read the 4th Part:

Question 1: Have you ever been on a pilgrimage? What was that experience like? If not, what do you imagine is the purpose of a pilgrimage? Where would you like to go? Why?

Question 2: : Let’s talk about the Six Seismic Shifts. They are: Begin the Conversation, Ask God What He Wants, Give Yourself to Prayer, Transform Everything into Prayer, Make Yourself Available and Just Keep Showing Up. Does one of these resonate with you more than the others? Which seismic shift do you feel you are experiencing right now?

Question 3: Matthew muses that the spiritual life is not a straight line. Have you experienced that in your own journey? Share with the group.

Our Founder's First Feast Day

Our Founder’s First Feast Day
August 13, 2021

Brother Knights,

Today is a historic day for the Knights of Columbus and for the Catholic Church — it is the first feast day of our Founder, Blessed Michael McGivney.

This is a day of celebration, reflection and prayer. The Church has chosen August 13 to honor our Founder because it falls one day after the anniversary of his birth and one day before the anniversary of his death, when he entered eternal life. During the 38 years in between, Father McGivney answered God’s call to defend the family and the faith, most notably by founding the Knights of Columbus. In the words of our Supreme Convention theme, which were drawn from the Apostolic Letter of Pope Francis on St. Joseph, our Founder truly embodied “creative courage” in service to God — and his example should inspire us all to live boldly in faith.

The Papal Message to the Supreme Convention observed that “The joyful event of Father McGivney’s beatification, celebrated this past year in Hartford, marked a significant milestone in [the Order’s] distinguished history and represents a summons to renewed fidelity to the founding principles of faith, fraternity and charitable assistance to those in need.”

For many years, Knights and our families have prayed for our Founder’s intercession. His presence in heaven was confirmed by the miraculous healing of an unborn child, the son of a brother Knight. That miracle paved the way for Father McGivney’s beatification last October, when he was raised to the honors of the altar (2 min Highlights. 19 min Recap). Now, we hope and pray for a second miracle, so that we may soon call Father McGivney a saint.

August 13 will be a special day for the Knights of Columbus going forward. In the new opening prayer written for Masses honoring our Founder, we will hear the celebrant ask our Lord to grant that, like Blessed Michael, “we too may become vessels of mercy in our day and so enter into our heavenly inheritance.” This prayer is meant for every Knight, for in these words we find our life’s work.

On this blessed day, I offer this prayer and pledge to work alongside you — creatively building up the Knights of Columbus, and courageously defending the family and the faith. And together with you, I give thanks to God for the good work He began in our Founder, and continues in us.

Blessed Michael McGivney, pray for us! Happy Feast Day!

Fraternally,

Patrick E. Kelly
Supreme Knight
