Immaculee Ilibagiza at St. John Fisher April 29-30

Author Immaculee Ilibagiza tells her story of living in a small bathroom with 7 other women for 91 days during the genocide in Rwanda - where a million people were slaughtered in 1994.  This holocaust was predicted by the Blessed Mother in apparitions approved by the Church and one of those visionaries of the apparitions will probably accompany Immaculee.

Friday, April 29, 5pm - 9pm
Saturday April 30, 9am - 12:30pm

Admission is $57 per person (2 for $95) to defray travel costs.

Our Blessed Mother's message is meant for the world.  And through the talks, the importance of this message becomes apparent.

This is also the weekend of the K/C state convention... so I need to figure out how to be in two places at once.

Prayer request for Deacon Bill

Guess maybe we've been overworking him. Deacon Bill McNamara at St. Clare's has been diagnosed with pneumonia. He works so hard for us; please pray for his comfort and rapid recovery.

Pictures from Easter Egg Hunt

At St. Clare's Holy Saturday Morning. I was doing coffee and bagels, so I only got a few pictures of the as kids were waiting for the start.

Old friend in the hospital

On Thursday, Clare O'Connell, Jean O'Connell's daughter was in a seriously rollover accident late afternoon. Due to impact and a lot of glass imbedded in her arm, she had compound arm fracture, vascular and nerve damage. She was in surgery much of the night. Clare is in ICU. The surgeons were able to save her arm by taking a vein from her leg. Please pray for her recovery and recovery of function in her arm. Praising God that she made it through a long and complex surgery, and that brain CT was clear.

Initiation Degree Road Trip!

As we discussed at the meeting, the Initiation Degree for Divine Mercy Sunday is canceled due to lack of time for our team to rehearse. It was recommended that we find another close council to take members to for initiation degrees. I have found one. Holy Trinity is holding an initiation Degree at 6pm on Thursday, April 7. If this is agreeable to our candidates, we will hold a Membership Application Committee Meeting at 5:30pm at St. Clare's on Thursday, April 7 and carpool to Holy Trinity for the Degree. Please e-mail seebert42@gmail.com if you would like to go. There is a possibility of another one at Lake Oswego on Monday April 11, if that will work better for you personally.

K/C Meetings - Third MONDAY of the month

At our last regular council meeting, it was decided to change our monthly meeting date to occur on the Third Monday of each month.  But the meeting time will stay the same; 7pm.  So our next meeting will be on Monday, April 18 at 7pm in the St. Clare Fireside room.  My hope is that this change will better accommodate members who have a conflict on other days we've tried in the past.  It appears we will also be alternating between the St. Clare and St. John Fisher locations for our meetings.  More on this later - but reminders will be provided to reduce the confusion...

I suspect my pontificate will best be remembered as the one where we kept changing the date of the meeting.  Oh well - it could be worse.  But please try to adapt your schedules to accommodate this new date.

We are also scheduled for hosting a breakfast at St. John Fisher on Sunday April 10 after both masses.  More on this later too!  But please consider assisting as there will be plenty to do.
Thanks,
Ken

To please the little kids in Mass on Palm Sunday

This is a slighly different method than I've done in the past, however, if you learn to make Palm Leaf Crosses, you'll be more popular than the balloon man at a party. My method is that I start right after the blessing of the palms, and then I trade with a child under the age of 8 or a child over the age of 80 to get another palm to tie. I think I'll try using this method this year, as with some palms I'll be able to make two crosses.

Volunteer Request

Pia at St. Clare's has asked for Knights to be ushers at Palm Sunday celebrations. None are needed at 5pm, but we could use one or two at the 8:30 and 10:45 Mass. The job is easy, and you may attend Mass. All that is needed is to guard the East Transept door of the church. The instructions are different depending on the weather. If it is raining, you are to direct the procession line from the Parish Hall door to the East Transept Door. If it is not raining, the procession will go through the parking lot and you need to direct people to the North door on Spring Garden St. Please contact Ted Seeber, seebert42@gmail.com, to volunteer

State bimonthly newsletter

The April-May issue of the Columbian is out. I recommend you read it online if possible, our DD brought a copy to the meeting and it is 30 pages.

The Catholic Source Book

At our March Meeting, Deacon Scott recommended the following book as a way to learn about the faith, and it was asked that I put it on the blog. I found a link to the 4th edition (one newer than the one Deacon Scott brought) at Our Sunday Visitor's book shop page:

Caatholicism Episodes 5 & 6

The series continues in Episode 5 with "The Indispensable Men: Peter, Paul, and the Missionary Adventure.   Insightful description which is biblically based tells the story of these two men who were central to the early Church and the important role they played.  Again, the scenery and music is inspiring - even in the narrative format presented by Fr. Barron.  58 minutes.

Episode 6; A Body Both Suffering and Glorious; The Mystical Union of Christ and the Church discusses how our Church is One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic with detailed examples and insight.  47 minutes.

Made for Greatness- Leah Darrow

This wonderful Lighthouse CD is a talk by Leah Darrow, once a runway model on the reality TV show, America's Top Model. She is a revert to the faith after finding spiritual destruction in the near-pornographic world of modeling and reality television. If you have a young girl in your life who seems too attached to physical beauty, this is a good CD to listen to with her.

Catholicism - Episodes 3 & 4

In episode 3, Fr. Barron presents compelling arguments for God's existence.  Citing Thomas Aquinas he offers one proof called "Contingency" - explaining that all things come and go but do not exist through their own power.  Well worth the short 52 minute colorful presentation.

Our Blessed Mother is the subject of episode 4, Mary, Ark of the New Covenant, the New Eve, the Mother of God.  The dogmas of The Immaculate Conception and The Assumption are presented.  Again, HD quality video from various parts of the world make this 49 minute episode visually interesting.

I hope to finish this series before our next meeting so that you can check it out of our library.  Best watched with the whole family.

Service hours due

Please record service hours you've completed through February using this link (if on Chrome, right click and Open in Acrobat):
http://informationr.us/Council15485MonthlyReporting.pdf

Perhaps you have one or two things - helping a neighbor, serving at mass, holding the door for someone.  Amazing how small things count!  Anyway, let me know as I have to fill out a form to prove we're alive and doing well. - Thanks, Ken

To all you prayer warriors - I received this e-mail from the Deaconate office.

Thanks,

Subject: Prayers for Deacon Len Soper (Posted by Deacon Brian Diehm)

Deacons, Wives —
Word from Jackie Soper is that Len has been in the hospital for several days, recovering from a ruptured gallbladder. She tells me that it has been quite dicey for some time, but that he appears to have “turned the corner” and is beginning to recover. Let us pray that that continues!
Jackie says their two daughters are on site, and that she is supported by them.
Len is in Sacred Heart Hospital in Springifeld (River Bend). If you plan to visit, I’d suggest calling ahead to see that visitors are approved and that Len is up to the visit.
Jackie asks prayers of the community for Len and for their family at this time.

Breakfast Report Part One: Money raised

From Ted Seeber:  Pictures will be coming later in the week, I ran out of time today to get them off of James Michael Morgan's phone, but I thought you might like to know the money collected at the breakfast:

We had two baskets at the request of the Pastoral Council on Phil's table.

The Basket for the Parish Lenten Service Project of lunches for Sears Shelter was separate, and collected $125 by my count.  I bagged and labeled it and Mila deposited it.

Here's Phil's numbers for what was in the normal breakfast basket.:
On Sun, Mar 6, 2016 at 2:10 PM, Phil <pdjarvis1@comcast.net> wrote:
Gross Proceeds:
       8:30    $413.50
    10:30     $ 73.00

Total Gross Proceeds:    $486.50

Less Expenses:                $168.00

Net Proceeds:                                $318.50

If we add that to what the Knights collected for breakfast donations, we grossed $611.50  $159 of which will go into the General Fund for the parish, $125 of which will go towards lunches, and the rest for Knights expenses and council 15485.

Thank you to all of our volunteers that participated!

Teach your family about the Knights- Fr. McGivney The Musical!

Remind your family about why the Knights of Columbus was founded and why we celebrate St. Patrick's day coming up.

1st Degree Coming up for Council 15485

From Council Ceremonials Chair Ted Seeber:
With two potential recruits from the RCIA program at St. Clare's, and with the McGivney musical on Friday, and with it being that time of year when new members join the faith, John Clare Council 15485 will be hosting a 1st Degree Charitable Exemplification on Sunday, April 3 (Divine Mercy Sunday).

Gathering Location is the Fireside Room, downstairs in the Parish Office,8535 SW 19th Ave, Portland OR 97219.

Park in the lot on 19th and go around the back side by the fence to enter in the back door. Candidates should be there at 2:00pm to straighten out paperwork and dues, Degree will begin at 3:00pm. Degree Team is requested to meet at 1:00pm for rehearsal. If other councils are bringing candidates, we request that you bring a standard 1st Degree Candidate Kit with you, as our supplies are low.

Edit:- Times are now up in the air until we discuss at the Business Meeting March 17th. There has been some pushback from members of the Degree Team against holding a degree on a Sunday.
