Phil Jarvis Funeral Announced

 From Donna:

I am now officially a widow.  My husband of 67 years, Phil, passed away Wednesday at about noon of a massive stroke after lingering, unconscious, for four days in the hospital.

After talking to both the funeral home (Youngs in Tigard) and the church (St. Juan Diego Church in Hillsboro , click to map) it was decided to have the funeral on Saturday, January 6th at 10 am with a reception at the church following.  The graveside ceremony won't be until one p.m. because it's in Tigard at the St. Anthony cemetery on Gaarde St., click link to map.

Volunteer opportunity

2023 Holiday Party Media

Our Holiday Party was quite the success this year- with 4 out of our 7 essay contest winners present.  However, due to sound quality in the video, I am also posting this link to our full PDF submitted to the State Competition.  You can also watch the video online on Youtube.  I would suggest, due to sound quality issues, that downloading the PDF first to read along with the kids will help.

Thanksgiving Message from State Deputy

Worthy Brother Knights,

I would like to take this opportunity to bid each and every one of you a very hearty and sincere Happy Thanksgiving! As Knights, we have so many things to be thankful to God for. Let us take the time today to thank God for everything He has blessed us with!

Thanksgiving is most commonly known and recognized for celebrating when the pilgrims came to the New World seeking out their religious freedom from England. There are many examples of people traveling to the New World wishing to freely live out their beliefs. This land and nation was founded on religious freedom. Many were willing to risk so much in order to come to this land and obtain such. This is how important religious beliefs are and important it is to be able to freely exercise these beliefs. Let us be thankful for the gift of religious freedom in our land and the ability to exercise our religious beliefs.

Growing up, the Era of Exploration was my favorite era of history. I enjoyed seeing the very beginnings of how this nation was established and how many people first saw how beautiful this land is. It was inspiring to see many European explorers, many of whom were devout Catholic, go out on daring adventures and discover the amazing treasures of the Americas. Of course, the most notable of these explorers was our own patron, Christopher Columbus. Columbus was also a very devout Catholic who brought our Catholic Faith to the New World.

One of our principles of the Order is Patriotism. It is a very patriotic thing indeed to celebrate this national holiday of Thanksgiving and to remember all of the early explorers who set this land on a path to becoming a great nation that serves God and is devoted to God. Let us give thanks for this great nation!

As Catholics, we have the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the source and summit of our Catholic Faith and it is truly an immense privilege to be able to partake in the Eucharist. To welcome Christ into us and to adore Christ is truly an amazing blessing. Let us go to Mass on Thanksgiving or perhaps after Thanksgiving and adore Christ in the Eucharist. As Knights of Columbus, we should be most deeply and profoundly thankful for the Eucharist and the Holy Mass.

Finally, I personally wish to say that I am thankful for each and every one of you, my brothers. I am thankful for the team of State Officers who has worked very hard this year so far. I wish to thank all the State Directors, Chairmen, and District Deputies for their efforts in serving the State. Thank you to all the councils for all your hard work in serving the Parish and helping men become better Catholics, husbands, fathers, men. Thank you to all brothers for saying yes to being a Knight of Columbus. Happy Thanksgiving!

Vivat Jesus!

Badges, Badges

It's time to order name badges again.  We haven't done so since Phil was FS, and we have a number of new members.  If you're like Ted Seeber- you also either lose them from time to time, or the Knights symbol has come off your badge.

To that end, Ted Seeber and Don Mey are collecting names.  Please respond by November 10 if you need a badge.

You may also order a Lady's badge for your wife.   We did that pre-covid for a holiday party, and it was quite well received.

Thanks to All

Thanks to all who helped make our breakfast at St. John Fisher this past Sunday a success.  As I passed through the dining area yesterday, I received a number of compliments on the quality of our breakfast. I also noticed, especially after the 11am Mass, people who were obviously first-time participants.  They needed direction to the kitchen.  I believe the word will get around as to how good our breakfasts are, and we will have even greater success in the future.   Also, when I returned the key to the SJF office this morning, the Business Manager commented on how nice the hall and kitchen looked this morning and what a great job we did on clean-up after the breakfast.

Thanks again.

Day of Prayer and Fasting for peace in the Middle East

 Dear St. Clare Community,

Pope Francis is asking that tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 17th be a day of prayer, fasting, and abstinence for peace in the Middle East.  We will open the church from 5-7:00pm that evening for anyone who would like to come for quiet prayer in the church.  You are welcome for as long as you like during that time.  Prayer is a powerful tool, let’s join the multitudes around the world in praying for peace.

Warm regards,

Fr. Don and Deacon Bill

------------------------------
In support of this, we ask all Knights to meet *IN THE CHURCH* for a 6pm Rosary with your families.  Our meeting will follow.

Ted Seeber

--------------------------------
And From the Supreme Knight:

Brother Knights,

As we struggle to comprehend the horrific events in the Holy Land, I urge all Knights of Columbus and their families to join me in answering the call of the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, and our United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to a day of fasting and prayer for peace and reconciliation tomorrow, October 17.

As stated by Cardinal Pizzaballa, “In this time of sorrow and dismay, we do not want to remain helpless. We cannot let death and its sting (1 Cor 15:55) be the only word we hear. That is why we feel the need to pray, to turn our hearts to God the Father.”

Cardinal Pizzaballa’s full statement can be found here: https://www.lpj.org/posts/a-day-of-fasting-and-prayer.html.

Together in prayer, we can beg Christ’s mercy and peace upon all those who are suffering.

Fraternally,

Patrick E. Kelly
Supreme Knight

A Prayer for Peace in Israel and Palestine

From Tom Owens, and Sojourner Magazine

A PRAYER FOR PEACE IN ISRAEL AND PALESTINE

“They will not hurt or destroy
on all my holy mountain...” —Isaiah 11:9

God of Comfort,
send your Spirit to encompass all those whose lives
are torn apart by violence and death in Israel and Palestine.
You are the Advocate of the oppressed
and the One whose eye is on the sparrow.
Let arms reach out in healing, rather than aggression.
Let hearts mourn rather than militarize.

God of Justice,
give strength to those whose long work for a just peace
might seem fruitless now. Strengthen their resolve.
Do not let them feel alone. Show us how to support their work
and bolster their courage. Guide religious leaders to model
unity and reconciliation across lines of division.
Guide political leaders to listen with their hearts as they seek peace and pursue it.
Help all people choose the rigorous path of just peace and disavow violence.

we lift up Palestine and Israel — its people, its land, its creatures.
War is a monster that consumes everything in its path.
Peace is a gift shared at meals of memory with Christians, Muslims, and Jews.
Let us burn incense, not children. Let us break bread, not bodies.
Let us plant olive groves, not cemeteries.
We beg for love and compassion to prevail
on all your holy mountains.

God of Hope,
we lift up the cities of the region: Gaza City and Tel Aviv,
Ramallah and Ashkelon, Deir El Balah and Sderot,
so long divided, yet so filled with life and creativity.
Come again to breathe peace on your peoples
that all may recognize you.

God of Mercy,
even now work on the hearts of combatants
to choose life over death, reconciliation over retaliation,
restoration over destruction. Help us resist antisemitism in all its forms,
especially in our own churches. All people, Israelis and Palestinians,
deserve to live in peace and unafraid, with a right to determine
their future together.

God of the Nations,
let not one more child or elder be sacrificed on altars of political expediency.
Keep safe all people from unjust leaders who would exploit
vulnerability for their own distorted ends.
Give wise discernment to those making decisions to pursue peace.
Provide them insight into fostering well-being, freedom, and thriving for all.
Teach all of us to resolve injustices with righteousness, not rockets.
Guard our hearts against retaliation, and give us hearts for love alone.

Strengthen our faith in you, O God of All Flesh,
even when we don’t have clear answers,
so that we may still offer ourselves nonviolently
for the cause of peace.

 Hello Gentleman,

I am sorry this took so long but I have a shirt option here for the council if we wanted to order in bulk. I went with the polo because they can be worn to mass but I also included the link to a t-shirt if anyone was interested. I chose this polo becuase it was just about the cheapest one and it has a pocket for our name tags. Both links are included to copy and paste into your browser if there is a problem with the images.

An extremely successful breakfast in the books

Preliminary figures from Erik and Ken this morning were very exciting!

1st shift gross:  $730

2nd shift gross:  $435
Total gross: $1,170

Our wonderful shopper, Ken Paulsen, pulled off a major miracle in this time of inflation, cost of the groceries was only slightly higher than normal for the first breakfast of the season, $231.96.

Which means our net is $938.04!  A new record for breakfast at St. Clare's.

Our photographer Michael Chau borrowed Ted Seeber's video camera, and got some interesting footage as well, click through to the blog to play it!

Beware email scams

It appears that we are once again getting email scams under the names of our clergy and higher officers.

If you get an email asking for a discrete matter, check the email address.  If it does not match what you know, do not reply.

Of course, our order gives us a few code words we can use for emergency identification in untrusted communications:

Fraternal Greeting: Vivat Jesus!

Watchword of the Order:  Tempus Fugit, Memento Mori

Addressing the person you are communicating with as Worthy Title, such as Worthy Grand Knight, or at least a respectful "My Brothers All".

These should be given *slightly* more credence, but always enlist the help of other council members if there is a need.  Never offer help unilaterally, even if you think you can afford it.

OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH

Since 1973, the year the Supreme Court legalized abortion nationwide in Roe v. Wade, the month of October has been set aside by the U.S. bishops as a time to focus on protecting God’s precious gift of human life.

What better way to start the month than attending our council sponsored pro-life Holy Hour at St. John Fisher Church on Tuesday October 3rd at 7PM.  Our Holy Hours including Eucharistic Exposition, Pro-life Rosary and Benediction are at St. John Fisher at 7PM on the first Tuesday and at St Clare from 2PM to 4PM on the first Saturday of each month.

From the State Deputy

 Worthy Brother Knights,

Many of you may have heard at this point that St. Joseph's
Catholic Church in Salem experienced a devastating fire
early on 8/31. This is extremely devastating to our Catholic
community in Oregon and especially the Salem metro area.
It is one of the largest Parishes in the State.

It is in times like this, when we as Knights are called to step
forward to assist those in need. I have reached out to the
Parish, the Council, the DDs in the area, and the Archdiocese
on guidance on how best to proceed. I also made correspondence
with Supreme. Having reached out to these resources, I have the
following information for all councils and would like to strongly
encourage each and every member of the State to assist in
any possible way.

1. There will be a public Rosary in the parking lot at St. Joseph's
on Sunday evening 9/3 at 7pm. Thank you very much to the
Keizer Council for helping lead this effort and promote this. It is an
exemplary example of brothers helping brothers. I would like to
encourage all councils to encourage their members and parishioners
to attend.
721 Chemeketa St NE, Salem, OR 97301

2. If any member or council is interested in providing some financial
support, this would be greatly appreciated. Please write the checks
to Oregon State KofC Charities and we will direct the funds accordingly.

Brothers, one thing that has always greatly impresses me about the
Knights of Columbus and the Order is that we step up very quickly to
disaster situations such as this. We did this in COVID, with the fires,
disasters out of State, and many others. Men, it is an opportunity to
step into the breach! Let us as Knights become who we were born to be!

Thank you, Vivat Jesus!

From Archdiocese Of Portland ChurchAlive Newsletter

Pray for St. Joseph in Salem

Damaged in Fire

A devastating fire broke out early this morning at St. Joseph Parish / Iglesia de San Jose in Salem. Archbishop Alexander Sample was on site all day to help support the community reeling from this tragedy. In a statement released earlier today, he gave thanks to God that no one was hurt and expressed his gratitude to the first responders. The Archbishop also implored the faithful to pray the Memorare at noon today in solidarity with the people of St. Joseph parish.

The community is already hard at work on recovery efforts. Tents are up in the parking lot where the Archbishop celebrated Mass today with more than 300 of the faithful.

Archbishop Sample will be back in Salem on Sunday to celebrate Mass at St. Joseph at 11:30 AM. All are invited to attend.

Donations to the St. Joseph Salem Fire Relief Fund can be made online.

Donate Now!

You can also mail your donations! Please make your check payable to the Archdiocese of Portland and include "St. Joseph Fire Relief" in the subject line. Mail to: The Archdiocese of Portland, PO Box 15149, Portland, OR 97293-9908. Thank you for your support!

From Ken Anderson III, State Deputy

 Worthy Brother Knights,

I hope everyone has been having a great summer so far. I hope everyone has done lots of fun activities with family and friends.

I bring you greetings from Orlando, FL at the 141st Supreme Convention. So far it's been great to see many familiar faces from previous Conventions and the SD meeting.

We are now into our second month of the Fraternal Year. July was a slow month. I recognize that the summer is always slow as many people are taking well earned and deserved vacations with their families. I acknowledge that many of you work extremely hard between KofC commitments, jobs, family, and other causes. Taking vacations is good and healthy.

That being said, councils do not need to take the summer off. In fact, there are so many opportunities that summer offers to councils that other parts of the year don't. These activities may invite new members to join. I'd like to strongly implore councils to remain active throughout the summer. Of course, all hands will not be on deck, but there's lots of opportunities with the members that are still in town. Families still need good, wholesome activities that the Knights can offer.

Summer doesn't need to be slow. August is a new month. Let's recommit ourselves to our mission and vision. Let us use the resources we have available to us throughout the summer to save lives and change lives. Let us help men serve God, grow in their Faith, and support their families. We have much work to do. If we can get the man right, we can get everything right. The world is desperately in need of more well formed men. Let's help go out there build better men!

Here are some ideas: outdoor public Rosaries, outdoor Faith processions, group Adoration, picnics, BBQs, family fun activities with games, hikes, Cor outside. Let's get outdoors and evangelize out there!

Don't forget about the upcoming Faith in Action Packed Event in Silverton at St. Paul Catholic Church on Saturday August 12th at 1pm. Make sure all members know about it and also prospective new members.

Finally, Blessed McGivney's Feast Day is Sunday August 13th. This is a Sunday, perfect for a big event. What is your council doing to honor our founder?

Vivat Jesus!
