Linda Collins is requesting help to move

It might be we're only moving her stuff into storage, but the time and date has now been set:  Monday, December 31st at 10:30 am.

She is a bit flexible to get the help she needs, and she'll be leaving stuff for St. Vincent De Paul to collect later, but she would like to accomplish this on Monday to hopefully get more help.

This is one of those "all hands are good hands" events for our council; an excellent chance to model for your children and grandchildren the virtue of charity.

You can call Linda at 971-263-7612 for more info.

We have a great love for our Vietnamese community!

I'm posting this letter from Fr. Matt Libra at St. Rose of Lima (Update from same below, so if you're getting this at 7pm on Christmas Eve, be sure to read the whole thing, or come back!) based on the news this morning, because due to our connection to St. Anthony's, we've got a great love for our Vietnamese community.

At 12:30 am Christmas Eve, a vandal drove an SUV through the Vietnamese Vicariate parish Our Lady of LaVang.  The vandal first hit the building, then drove through the main entrance, drove in circles over the pews, then exited the building, and was finally captured by police 15 minutes away at the Baxter Auto Parts near Portland Meadows (the pictures on Koin 6 shows that this wasn't exactly an off-road SUV, damage to the vehicle is so extensive that I'm surprised he made it that far).

However, I think that the response of Fr. Angsar and Fr. Libra is appropriate, and amazing.  Please keep this congregation in your prayers.

Attack at Lavang
Dear Parishioners and friends,

Someone drove their vehicle into Our Lady of Lavang parish early this morning and destroyed all their pews and several entryways.  Their parishioners heard about it on the news and have showed up en masse to help clean up so they can celebrate Christmas.  Fr. Ansgar and several of their parishioners have been working since 2am.

They don't know what to do at this point.  Luckily the building remains structurally sound and their plan is to clean up and hold services in their church tonight.  We offered them our chairs, our space, anything we can give.  They are quite overwhelmed and shocked as you might imagine.

The one thing Fr. Ansgar, their pastor, asked for was that we pray for forgiveness.  The perpetrator turned himself in, is not known to their parish, but Fr. Ansgar doesn't want anyone's heart to become hard at Christmas.  I know you are all busy with Christmas preparations, but please pause for a moment and pray for Our Lady of Lavang parish, pray for the offender, and if you have any practical skills or help you can provide check in with them.

with Hope that Christ might change our world for better by changing each of our hearts,

Fr. Matt Libra
---------------------------------------
From Fr. Matt, a few hours later:

Lavang update
In 3 hours time parishioners from Our Lady of Lavang showed up to make room at the inn for Jesus.  Lavang also wants to thank the St. Rose parishioners who showed up to help.  What happened brings tears to our eyes.

Destroyed pews are removed.  Broken glass and mangled entryways have been cleaned up and made "temporary new".  Even temporary doors have been installed to keep the cold out.  A thousand chairs have been set up.  Hundreds of people have come and are still coming to help out in any way, from people with construction skills, to youth, to priests and bishops, everyone who believes it is better when Jesus is in the center of our world.  One parishioner said to me "My faith is stronger because of this".  In moments like this, God does something.  When distraction and distress happen, we learn what matters most and what doesn't matter.  No one cares that there is plywood showing.  Everyone is beaming, because of this response of love.  Thank you to all the parishioners and priests of Our Lady of Lavang parish - you gave us a beautiful example of making room for Jesus at the inn of your hearts!

All Masses at Our Lady of Lavang will be held as scheduled, they even gained some seating by doing it this way.  As Fr. Ansgar said - now our church will be a place of pilgrimage as people come to see what has happened here.  He continues to ask for prayers for the person who did this, who suffers from mental illness.

St. Clare's Parishioner needs help moving

Linda Collins is a disabled parishioner at St. Clare's with MS.   She is getting evicted from her current home at 1921 Marigold St.

She knows this is short notice, but she'd like help possibly as soon as Thursday.

Her phone number is 971-263-7612

She is willing to rent a U-Haul, but I told her we have some men with pickup trucks; if a U-Haul is needed she will need a ride as her car has broken down.

From SIS at St. Clare's

Dear friends,
Our long time parishioner and friend Bob Kocarnik is in Meridian Park Hospital
with pneumonia.  Bob has been an active member of our parish and at 93 he has
still been visiting Markham House faithfully every fourth Wednesday.

Let's all pray for him and for his family.

This Wednesday, December 19th, will be the St. Clare Community Reconciliation
Service in the church at 7 p.m. (If you cannot make it to this service, Reconciliation
will still be available after morning mass on Thursday and Friday and at the usual
4:30 time on Saturday).

On a dark, rainy, but joyful (Gaudate) Sunday, this prayer from some sixteen
centuries ago still speaks to us. From St. Augustine of Hippo: Look on us, Jesus,
and let all the darkness of our souls disappear before the beams of your brightness.
Fill us with your holy love, and open to us the treasures of your wisdom.
You know all our desires, so bring to perfection what you have started and what the
Holy Spirit has awakened us to ask in prayer.  Amen.

Blessings on your last week before Christmas.
Sheila

Next Breakfast at SJF

Will be February 10, 2019, one week after the breakfast at St. Clare's.  This will enable us to shop for both and save money.

As agreed in the last meeting, 100% of the proceeds will go to the SJF Building Fund.

Next breakfast at SJF

Since we aren't going to have a business meeting in December, SJF breakfast captain Mike Devlin, mdevprop@hotmail.com, would like your opinion on two upcoming dates:
January 13th would be three weeks before our next breakfast at St. Clare's.
February 10th would be the week after.

Please let Mike know of your preference, and we'll discuss at the potluck on the 21st.

Round Trip Airfare to Medjugorje $460

As many of you know, my son is trying to assist others visit Medjugorje after having witnessed a miracle there earlier this year.  I remained amazed at how deeply this experience has affected his life, as I hadn't considered Kenny a very deeply religious person.  He spends a lot of time helping others learn about and visit Medjugorje.  Of course, he doesn't make a dime in these efforts.

Although R.T. airfare is generally around $1200 to visit a European country, Kenny's research has uncovered R.T. airfare for $460 at this time:  March 31 - April 7, 2019.  Flights are from Seattle, but he's working on a van/bus from our area.  With hotels and transfer expenses, he estimates a budget of about $850p.p. for the week.   For those of us on a tight budget, this is as good as it gets, and makes a pilgrimage possible.  For others who can afford the $2000++ organized pilgrimages - more power to them.

I'm just trying to get the word out - to those interested in visiting or learning more about Medjugorje. I do believe it is legitimate, and will eventually be approved like Fatima and Lourdes.  Why is Mary appearing there?  Who can know the mind of God?  But I figure that if He wants his Mother to appear somewhere, then it must be important to pay attention.

The Vatican's commission, headed by Cardinal Ruini concluded their 3 1/2 year study and have overwhelmingly voted favorably for approval of the initial apparitions as genuine and worthy of belief.  (Constat de Supernaturalitate).  The ongoing apparitions remain under study.  The pope hasn't ruled yet, but assigned Archbishop Henryk Hoser as the Vatican's Papal Envoy to oversee the parish - who also believes it is legit.  Like other Marian apparitions of the past, approval just doesn't happen while the event is ongoing.

Please Pray for Tom Hays

Degrees on December 1st in Hillsboro have been canceled.

Tom Hays has broken a foot- he's in a cast.  For those who recently had their third (like in the last 10 years), Tom Hays is the State Ceremonial Chairman and the only one in the state so far to have memorized the Conferring Officer Part of the Knighthood Degree.

Happy Thanksgiving and Good News from our friend Polinus

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!  And some good news from our brother Polinus!  Nancy is Pregnant!  New baby coming in late December.

In addition to that, as we discussed at the meeting, Fr. Don has approved our plan to donate 100% of our breakfast profits next breakfast to the St. Clare's School Science Room Fund.  We'll advertise that fact and see if we can get some extra giving happening at the breakfast on February 3rd.

Also, our Holiday party will be 7pm on December 21st, so mark your calendars and start thinking about what you will bring for a good potluck dish.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody.

A message from Archbishop Sample

Thank you to Fr. Matt Libra for sending this out on the St. Rose of Lima e-mail list.  I know it was sent to parishioners at a different parish- but we can all pray for these intentions:
As I announced at Masses this weekend about the upcoming US Bishop's meeting 10-14 Nov, here is a message straight from Archbishop Sample to you.

With prayers and Hope, Fr. matt libra
October 30, 2018

Dear Parishioners,

The U.S. bishops are joining together in a commitment of prayer and reparation leading up to the bishops’ general assembly, where we will be making critical decisions in response to the clergy sexual abuse crisis. With my brother bishops across the nation, I will be dedicating myself to seven days of intensified prayer and fasting, from Monday, November 5, through Sunday, November 11. The intentions for this period of prayer and sacrifice are three-fold:

·For the healing and support of all victims of clergy sexual abuse.
·For the conversion and just punishment of the perpetrators and concealers of sexual
abuse.
·For the strength of the bishops to be holy shepherds in protecting and leading our sheep
from all harm.

If you feel called to do so, you are welcome to join me in praying for these intentions. I would also be grateful for any prayers for me and my brother bishops during our general assembly, that we may follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit in responding to the tragedy of clergy sexual abuse in the Church.

Please be assured of my prayers for you, as well. Sincerely in Christ,

Archbishop Alexander K. Sample

The Combat Rosary Creed

I showed some of you my favorite rosary at the breakfast- my Swiss Guard Combat Rosary.

This is a creed that goes along with it (linked, to see link click through to blog post).

Next meeting, at 7:00pm on Tuesday the 20th of November, the day before many people travel for Thanksgiving, we will be saying this prayer, this creed.  There will be another reminder when I do the agenda, but please plan on picking your favorite rosary to be YOUR combat rosary- and bring it to the meeting for this special blessing.

Medjugorje Informational Meeting

Dear Brother Knights,

As you know, I'm helping my son Kenny in his effort to help others get
to Medjugorje.  So far, quite a few people are planning to go in Late
March - maybe a couple dozen or more.  So he's planned some
"informational meetings" to explain how it works and how to prepare.
The meeting in Portland will be this Sunday at 7pm at Round Table Pizza
near Barbur Blvd and Capitol Hwy. (next to McDonald's).  So if you, or
others you know would like more information, or would just like some
pizza, please come by and join us.

Although this is not an "organized" group pilgrimage - and NO money
changes hands - Kenny's effort is to explain the details of the
pilgrimage so that even first-time travelers can get the most out of
it.  As I may have explained to you, Kenny was somewhat skeptical about
Medjugorje, but included a short visit in connection with his European
vacation.  He, and his family witnessed the "Miracle of the Sun".  He
told me that he always believed in God, but now he felt it was more than
"belief" as he now has been given "proof".  And he feels a responsibility for
being given this proof and that is why he's trying to help others visit
Medjugorje.  He recently returned from his second visit.

He's developed a website that offers more detail,

www.VisitQueenOf Peace.com

but these information meetings are probably the best way to get
questions answered.  Come join us if you can!!!

Thanks,
Ken

In Defense of Christopher Columbus

In case you didn't see the back of the center table flyer at the breakfast, here is a link to the article by Fr. John A. Hardon for Columbus Day.  It's well worth the read, for it dispels many of the current myths about Christopher Columbus.

A great weekend

Congratulations to Joe and Gene on getting your Knighthood Degree.

We had another successful breakfast, raising $756, spent $170 on food, giving St. Clare's $243.

I think that is a record.

I counted 165 plates served, which means our breakfasts at this point are costing us about $1.03 a plate.  We made up about 30 lbs of pancake batter, 31 dozen eggs, and 39 boxes of sausage.

From Daniel and an update on 3591 degrees

Thank you so much for your prayers and good wishes. Your prayers have been answered. My mother's growth has turned out to be benign. Thanks so much!
-------------
And now for something completely different, degrees.  I've received word from our parent council, 3591 in Tigard, that men seeking the degree of initiation should be there by 6pm in the parish office at St. Anthony's.  Contact Ted Seeber, seebert42@gmail.com if you are interested- even if you've had your 1st degree, it's worth going to see this team in action.

And that a 2nd and 3rd has now been rescheduled for our area:For those Brothers that need to complete the Formation (2nd) Degree and the Knighthood (3rd) Degree the Holy Family Council in SE Portland will be hosting these degrees on Saturday afternoon Oct. 6
If you are interested in participating and completing these degrees please contact Grand Knight Joe Jones at jajones503@gmail.com for more information.

If you need your Initiation Degree

Please let Ted Seeber, seebert42@gmail.com, know if you are free for the Council 3591 meeting on October 3rd.  We will need to be at St. Anthony's by 6:30pm for paperwork and Admissions meeting.

I will attempt to call people Sunday Night.

St. Clare Breakfast Time

Call for volunteers!  The next St. Clare Breakfast will be October 7, just a little over a week away.   Ted Seeber, GK, is the breakfast captain for this, so volunteer responses to seebert42@gmail.com are appreciated.

Three shifts are available to work as usual.
October 6, 6pm-8pm -setup/grocery delivery- we never go the full two hours if we have at least three people volunteering, usually a lot less.  Easy to make it to 5pm Mass and help,.
October 7, 7am-10:30am- First Shift Breakfast.  Depending on the job, you *might* be able to make it to 8:30 Mass, if you're willing to pull a Judas Shuffle to let us know that the Eucharist is happening and take up your position before people come from Mass.
October 7, 10:30am-2pm - once again, depending on your job, you may be able to attend 10:45 Mass, if you're willing to pull a Judas Shuffle to let us know that the Eucharist is happening and take up your position before people come from Mass.  You may also leave early IF there are enough people left for cleanup, or if we get cleanup done early.

We will be serving 9:30am-12:15pm.  Big rushes are 9:30am-10am, and 11:45am-12 noon.

The last few breakfasts we've served between 125-175 plates.  So any and all help is requested and appreciated.  I'll be sending the link for this blog post to Sisters in the Spirit as well.

If you can help and have not already done so, please volunteer with Mike Devlin at mdevprop@hotmail.com.  Right now, our breakfasts are our most visible action in both parishes, so I urge you to volunteer.  Mike revealed to us at the meeting last night that his greatest needs are 9:30am-11am and 11:30am-2pm, so if you can make either of those times, drop him a line to let him know you're coming.

Breakfasts at St. Clare's for the next year

Laurie Z. has just sent me an e-mail.  We're on the calendar for 4 breakfasts at St. Clare's in the coming year:

October 7
November 4
February 3
April 7

These are all Family Masses with the youth choir.  Contact Ted Seeber, seebert42@gmail.com, to volunteer.
