Prayer Request for Aunt and Uncle Effected By Hurricane Harvey in Houston

Dear Brother Knights,

Please pray for my Aunt Phyllis and Uncle Hershey who are stuck in Houston in the middle of Hurricane Harvey. Please pray for their safety, health and housing situation. They are an elderly couple and Uncle Hershey was already struggling with serious health issues before Hurricane Harvey. Please ask Father Michael McGivney to pray for them and for all the victims and survivors of Hurricane Harvey and for clean-up and rebuilding effort.

Also, please continue to pray for my parents as they are still struggling to find a healthy living situation. Please also ask Father Michael McGivney to continue to pray for them.

Thanks so much! May the Peace of Christ be with you!

Sincerely,

Brother Daniel Salomon

Dear Brother Knights,
Like you, I have a devotion to Our Blessed Mother.  Currently we are in the period of time that is 100 years since Our Blessed Mother appeared in Fatima, Portugal.  She appeared to three shepherd children; Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta starting on May 13, 1917 and on the 13th of the next 5 months culminating in "the miracle of the sun" witnessed by 70,000 people on October 13, 1917.  I have a good DVD movie telling the story of this fascinating event which is available for loan to any of you - but a similar YouTube version is available here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JI1u16Qp3IQ&t=495s

This event has been approved as "worthy of belief" by the Church.  And the message of Fatima is just as important today as it was 100 years ago.   Maybe more so.

I have been asked to organize a "Public Square Rosary" on Saturday, October 14, 2017 to celebrate this anniversary. Within the next couple of weeks, I should have the details figured out and will pass them on.  I hope many of you will be able to join me.

Our City, State and Nation desperately need the blessing of God.  Perhaps it is best requested through these events where our efforts demonstrate our faith and devotion.  Please prayerfully consider participating in a public rosary on October 14 at noon.  I believe it will be at Pioneer Square, but am not sure yet.
Thanks,
Bro. Ken Paulsen

Mark the Date, September 10th is the St. Clare's Church Picnic

We need the following volunteers:

  • 3 people at 8:00am to unload and set up the Magicator grill.
  • 2 cooks from 11:00am to 1pm to cook
  • 1 person to be with Christopher on the Lego Church Project
  • 1 person for the Soccer Challenge
  • 3 people 1pm-3pm to clean the grill and get it reloaded
Al Tabyoyon will be delivering the grill.  Ted will bring the Propane and be one of the three for the whole time.  Mike Devlin is taking the soccer challenge (we have a variety of prizes to hand out).  So we really just need 2 more cooks/setup/cleanup and somebody to do the Lego Church Project with Christopher.

On HR3391

As I am sure you are all aware, HR3391 has now been signed into law by Governor Kate Brown.  This 1.5% sales tax on health insurance is a cynical attack on our undocumented worker community, encouraging abortion and contraception in that community under the guise of free health care.  This new law violates several Federal statutes about using tax money to pay for abortion, and since the sales tax also affects health insurance from the Public Employees Benefits Board, will take about $25 million out of the education budget to help pay for it.

At St. Clare's the next two weekends, the Stop Taxpayer Funding for Aboriton petition will be available after all masses in the Parish Library.  There is a second petition also circulated by Oregon Right to Life, that specifically addresses the sales tax on health care issue.  As 1 Year Trustee, I urge all Knights to sign these petitions, to allow us to have the debate in Oregon on whether or not this is a reasonable use of public funds.

Request for Prayers

 Dear prayer warriors,
Ben, the son of Eddie who used to cook at Saint Andre Bessette when the St. Francis group prepared meals there for the homeless,  has been missing for 9 days. Ben is 17 years old. Please pray for Ben's safety and rapid return home.  His father Eddie is highly distraught and requests your prayers.  Eddie lived at our home for two years when he was homeless and Ben frequently visited us. He is a fine boy.

Pray for Mary Smith from St. Clare's

From the SIS group:

Mary Smith had a fall yesterday. Her daughters got her to urgent care and they were able to give her 10 stitches above the left eye and found a broken bone in her left pinkie.  In a few days she will get a cast on her left arm.  (darn it--- she's also left handed.)  She would so appreciate kind and gentle prayers for speedy healing .  Blessings to all the SIS  group!

A letter from Brother Tom

August 5, 2017

Dear family and friends,

Here is a note to update you on our recent happenings. As many of you know, Bonnie and I planned to put our house up for sale in August. We moved from a 4 bedroom home where we lived for 44 years into a small 2 bedroom apartment on July 1st. Our new address is 12505 SW North Dakota St., Apt 808, Tigard, OR 97223.Our apartment is great and only 3 blocks away from the house we lived in. That has make our transition much easier but we are still packing and unpacking a few boxes etc. daily.
On Tuesday afternoon, July 14, Bonnie tripped and fell while walking around in our house. She had been working with a lady from NW Organizers in decluttering. She hit her foot against a box or the corner of the wall falling hard to the floor on her left side.We called 911 and they took her to the emergency room at St. Vincent’s hospital for examination and treatment. She has a broken vertebrae in her neck and patella in her left knee, a dislocated little finger on her left hand (she is left handed so that adds to the complication), and pain in her other knee. Doctors put her in a brace for her neck and knee and gave her pain medication. She stayed in the hospital until the Friday the 21st when she was transferred to Maryville Nursing and Convalescent Center in Beaverton. She got PT and OT there and was released to come back home to our apartment yesterday. She will need to keep both braces on for about another 5 weeks. Please keep us in your prayers.
Bonnie had me and a steady parade of visitors, nurses, therapists and doctors coming daily. The treatment at Maryville was outstanding and we were blessed to be able to have her get in there. I have also been blessed with the help of my nephew, Michael Chau, and friends who have been so kind as to provide some meals for me. With the 3+ days of over 100 degrees this week we were fortunate to get 2 air conditioners installed before she came back to our apartment.
If you wish you can contact Bonnie any day on her cell phone 503.789.7313. She would be happy to hear from you.
Thanks for your continued love and prayers.

Bishop Fulton Sheen- a humor filled look at marriage from 1956

From when marriage was about raising children:

From our Seminarian, a report on his Pastoral Year

Hey Ted,

Just a quick update on the rest of my Summer. I complete my CPE Summer training session at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tacoma and St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way at the end of next week. My last overnight, on-call, as the only chaplain at the hospital was Thursday night, my last verbatim (review of a patient encounter) was Wednesday, and my last daily rotation in the hospital will be Tuesday.  Yeah for the end. It has been an intense Summer. Since I am not paid, I guess that you could say that my time was voluntary, though I have to be here for formation reasons. If you wanted to count it, I averaged 50-hours a week for the last 11-weeks.

I am taking some time off for vacation with the family starting Friday 11th, but have to swing through Portland before heading back to Rome on August 29. I plan to be at the first Mass at St. Clare’s August 26.  Father knows that I will be there and I plan to serve as acolyte at the Mass. Please let others know that I will be in attendance, and that I hope to see as many people as possible.

As stated above, I fly back to Rome on the 29th of August, Starting the first Monday of September, we have two weeks of training on Marriage prep and other how to officiate the Sacrament, then some other stuff. I will be on a silent retreat from the 17th to 23rd, and then preparing, God willing, for my ordination to the Diaconate at St Peter’s Basilica on the 28th of September. I am still waiting for my official letter from Archbishop Sample, but I was given a verbal call to orders earlier this Summer. Please ask the Knights to keep me in their prayers, and as I will have you all in mine during the retreat. I will email a link to a website with photos, as well as post some on facebook.

I have been given my Pastoral assignment for next year, which is to serve at the US Naval Support Base outside Naples Italy, which I did my third year of theology. I will be down there for a weekend every three to four weeks. This time I will be able to do more at Mass and will be proclaiming the Gospel and doing the homily at one of the weekend Masses during each visit. I don’t think that Deacons have house jobs, except maybe to give tours, but I won’t find out for sure till I return to Rome.

Archbishop has approved my studies at the Angelicum again, this time to get my STL (Sacred Theology License) in Spiritual Theology. This was far off my radar, as at first I thought to do Moral Theology, and as recently as last September planned to petition for Thomistic studies - as in Thomas Aquinas. My thought was a paper on Thomas’ notion of marriage, specifically, the spiritual nature of marriage. Late September, I read part of the book “On Love” by Bernard Clairvaux. This caused me to look at expanding my paper topic to look specifically at what makes a Catholic marriage a Catholic marriage - or what is the spiritual nature of marriage. This would allow me to incorporate Bernard’s writings, but moved me out of Thomistic studies. Spiritual Theology seems the best fit for the paper idea I have, and on reflection may prepare me to be a better priest, as I think one of the priests more important roles is to help people have a relationship with God and that is what spiritual theology is all about.

Please pass this information on to the Knights. I apologise that I only made the one meeting whilst on Pastoral year, but it was a busy year, and I was working to set up a Men’s group at STM. Father King hopes that maybe someday it will develop into a Knights group.

Your servant in Christ,

Rick LeFaivre
