KofC Membership Blitz Mass Announcement for St. Clare's. On Oct. 2, 1881, a group of men met in the basement of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut. Called together by their parish priest, Blessed Father Michael J. McGivney, these men formed a fraternal society that would one day become the world’s largest Catholic family fraternal service organization. Blessed Father McGivney started the order because he was faced, over and over again, with prejudice against Catholicism and the breakup of families upon the loss of a job, illness, or death of the breadwinner. Today, our Fathers in the Spirit are often taken for granted- left alone in their ministry. Today, in a culture that tells us fatherhood and men are unimportant and unnecessary, the Knights stand together in unity with our fellow fathers- both in the Holy Orders and in the Sacrament of Matrimony.
