Social Meeting December 20, 2022

In our last meeting we were trying to gauge interest for a holiday potluck, and several people said they'd be willing to come.  Families are invited to this, but I want to make sure we have something in every category.  Please click on this link to answer the survey if you are coming, along with a hint of what you are bringing.  It will be in the St. Clare Parish Hall at 6:30pm on December 20th.

Essay Contest Winners

I finally have 4 judges worth of scores. This year was extremely hard- all the essays were excellent.  And the grammar and style of these students were quite good as well, so it came down to the always-subjective content.  So in the end, we had clear winners.

For St. John Fisher:
1st Place- Lochlan Landerholm

2nd Place- Liam Baughman

3rd Place- Audrey Birkland

For St. Clare's:

1st Place- Mae Strickland

2nd Place- Meagan Coffield

3rd Place Emmy Schick

Knights Homework Assignments

1) HOLY MOMENTS BOOK BY MATTHEW KELLY

Our initial discussion of Matthew Kelleys' "Holy Moments" will begin with our November 15th Meeting. For the sake of time, we will temporarily pause Mike O'Phelans', For the Good of The Order section.

Part 1 AwarenessPages 1 thru 31, Questions;

  1. In section 1, Matthew Kelly gives two stories of an Abbot seeking answers from a wise old hermit. In both cases the hermit recommends a solution “Treat every person you ever meet like the second coming of Jesus in disguise”. What do these words mean to you? How do you see them applying in your life?
  2. On page 23 Kelly addresses the question of what is a Holy Moment. How would describe a holy moment in your own words to a next-door neighbor who is not a Catholic?
  3. Several places in Part 1, Kelly says that “Holy Moments are choices that are easy to live with.” Would you agree or disagree with this opinion? Why? Can you give an example?
If you need a copy of "Holy Moments", please contact Don Mey at, dmey1951@gmail.com, or text to 434.429.9881.

2) MEMBER CHALLENGE

- Have you asked at least 2 men to consider joining the Knights?

- Invite a potential member to participate in a Knight activity? example; this weekends Fr. Jims' Toiletry Kit Preparation, Sunday, noon to 3:00, at St. Clare Office basement.

A request from our Beef & Blueberry supplier

We do not normally do this, but our Blueberry supplier is in a bind.  The GK of Silverton council has two beef ready and just got a call from the Butcher's, which due to current supply chain issues had a year long wait list, so he has purchases available in half or quarter.  Very competitive price given inflation.

Hand Maid Farm
William Bill Seeber
503-409-9650

We raise grass fed beef with no hormones or antibiotics.

The total cost for the wrapped beef will be about $8.00 per pound, depending on cutting instructions.

The Rail weight with bones is about:  600 lb.

The price for the animal to be paid to the farm is on the Rail weight of $4.00 per pound to the farm.

That price is made up of the following example:
1000 lb. animal
600 lb. rail weight
360 lbs. packaged

Slaughter Fee $125
Cut & Wrap $360
Farm $2,400
Total = $2,885
Price per pound in the package = $8.01 / lb

Do not forget to let Gene know about your good works

We were just talking about this last night in the Officer's meeting!  From the Oregon State Council:

"In 2021-2022, Knights stepped up with more than 48 million hours of volunteer service. Each one makes the world a better place - and helps form men of greater purpose and service. A higher calling summons you each and every moment, and hour. Learn more at kofc.org."
How do we know this number for the entire order? In December and January, we ask men to fill out a survey about the volunteering work they do. That gets turned in as a part of our annual survey as a council. All councils turn this in, and it takes this long to process them all. By doing this survey, we justify our status as a 501c(8) nonprofit.
EVERYTHING you do as a Knight counts, even if it is a more individual volunteering opportunity like being Eucharistic Minister to the Homebound, helping out a neighbor, or being there for a suffering friend. Think Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy- it all counts. Sure, sometimes we're involved in very showy things like a breakfast at Mass or like what the Polish councils are doing for Ukrainian refugees, and those matter too, but those are reported in a different way. So let us know when that survey comes out in December.

Exemplification Scheduled For Saturday,,October 8

We have an exemplification scheduled for Saturday, October 8, after the 5pm Mass at St Clare's.  While I believe we have all the reading parts covered, we could use two more volunteers for non-speaking parts.  Required dress code is a dark sports coat and tie.  Email seebert42@gmail.com if you can make it.

Saturday, October 1, 2022

Fr. Richard is sick.

 HI Brother Knights,

I just learned this morning that Fr. Richard is in the hospital.  I was told that the Saturday evening mass may be canceled and there's uncertainty about tomorrow's masses.  I believe checking with the parish office may provide additional information.  (503) 244-4945  Please keep Fr. Richard in your prayers.

UPDATE:

I just got an email from St. JF saying "There will be no 5:30 Mass on Sunday, October 2. " Which I interpret to mean that the other masses are still on.

On another note, I see too that the last edition of the Catholic Sentinel has just been published.  This periodical has been a centerpiece for Catholic information for 152 years.  It's sad to see it go and the high quality articles, editorials, photos and insights will be missed.

From State Deputy Ray Prom

It's back.  Big and bold, if you've never gone to this men's conference sponsored by The Holy League and the Knights of Columbus, I highly recommend it.  The stories you will hear from the speakers are inspiring, and nothing beats 6am Rosary and Mass before the sun rises.

Once again, I'm opening this up for three shifts:

  1.   Shift 1:  Setup & Shopping.  On October 1, at 4pm, Ken will have the necessary items at St. Clare's.  Needed 3-4 volunteers from 4pm-5pm for setup.  If we have enough people, we should be able to have 67 place settings set up in that time and be able to attend 5pm Mass.  If we don't have enough people, we'll continue after Mass, but should be done no later than 7:30pm.

Gentlemen,

We have a number of volunteer opportunities at St. Clare Church. Fr. Don has asked if the Knights would conduct a call tree, inviting St. Clare Parishioners to the One Mass, One Family & St. Clare Picnic (see flyer below). We will need phone volunteers starting Tuesday Sept. 6th through Friday Sept. 9th. If calling from the St. Clare Offices, calls to be conducted between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM Tuesday thru Thursday. Friday expanded hours with calls beginning at 12:30 PM. You may choose to call from your personal phone. Lists of parishioners will be available Tuesday Sept. 6th.  Contact Don Mey directly via text or email with the day or days you are available.

Debbie Henkelman is organizing the St. Clare Picnic on Sept. 11th. Debbie advises the greatest need is for food servers and ground crews (filling in food and drinks and keeping garbage empty).  This is the link for volunteers to sign up. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gfczV-7_UUX5F-bw-_phpjRp04WZLoWkQUC_ZZVg1iU/edit?usp=sharing  If you are able to volunteer, please copy Gene and I regarding potential service hours.

John/Clare Council 15485 August 16th Meeting

Council Meeting Tuesday August 16th 7pm (In-person Meeting)

Installation of Officers New Term, followed by business Agenda

In person @ St. Clare Parish Church

Hello Brother Knights,

Please join us this Tuesday, August 16th at 7pm for our next Council #15485 meeting, in person, at St. Clare Parish Church, 8535 SW 19th Avenue, Portland, OR 97219.  We will conduct the Installation of New Officers, with Mark Larson, Deputy Director, district 3, and Deacon Bill McNamara, acting Chaplain, in attendance. (We request business casual with collared shirt for this ceremony)  We will continue with our monthly meeting following the installation of New Officers.

We have 2 important items scheduled for a vote on our Agenda. Please review the information recently posted on our Blog regarding, 1) Support of Fr. Jim Galluzzo Ministries, and 2) A $300.00 donation to St. Andrew Nativity School. Here is the AGENDA to download.

Attention John/Clare Council members 15485

From Tom Owens dated July 17th in an email sent to Don Mey and forwarded to all John/Clare Council members.

I have had contact, as you requested, with Fr. Jim Galluzzo two weeks ago regarding how our Council might support his various charitable activities with the poor and homeless. Below is a brief summary of our conversation.

Contact with Fr. Jim Galluzzo

I talked with Fr. Jim this past week regarding support our KC Council may be able to provide to him for the charitable organizations he coordinates—The Urban Spirituality Center (USC) and Diversity as Gift (DAG). USC serves the needy at Street Roots, Rose Haven, Maybelle Center for Community, and the Portland Homeless Family Solutions. The types of items he collects through USC include bottled water, men and women’s underwear, socks, hygiene items, baby diapers and wipes, and children’s underwear, school supplies, juice boxes and dried fruit and nuts.

The DAS serves the homeless, low-income people and people living with AIDS. Assistance they provide includes hygiene kits, coasts, sweaters, socks, hats, gloves, first aid kits, gift cards, back packs, school supplies, shower supplies etc. in addition to cash to 13 homeless projects and emergency funds for electric bills, food and rent. Agencies he assists include the Maybelle Center for Community, Downtown Chapel, Sisters of the Road, St. Francis Dining Hall, Rose Haven, St Andrews Nativity School, and Street Roots.

Fr. Jim is currently collecting school supplies for children in August. Perhaps we can recruit some KC volunteers at our next monthly meeting to form a committee to help plan, organize, collect and deliver some of these items to Fr. Jim now and on a quarterly or semi-annual basis. We might also dedicate the proceeds from one or two pancake breakfasts a year for the needs identified above. I would be happy to coordinate with Fr. Jim and a KC chair of these activities.

I wish to make two motions for the new business section of our Tuesday meeting. One is to have a member discussion and vote on whether we, as a Councl,  agree to support the various ministries of Fr. Jim Galluzzo and recruit a team of KC volunteers and chair to coordinate this work.

Motion 1) Is to support the various ministries of Fr. Jim Galluzzo, with man power as needed, schedule of events and requirements to be posted on Knights Blog Activity Calendar

Motion 2)  John/Clare Council to donate $300 to help support the work of the St. Andrews Nativity School in NE Portland. This school, under the sponsorship of the Jesuits, provides a first-class education, tuition free, for about 45  6 through 8 grade low income, predominately minority boys and girls. The staff also commit to follow up with the students and their families to prepare to get high school scholarships and later scholarships for college and/or work training programs. Michael Chau and I attended a tour of the school and fund-raising lunch there last month and were impressed. Michael, Oanh Nguyen, and I have already committed to making personal monthly donations to this school.

Additional information from Tom Owens dated July 21st;

Rational for Council support for the St. Andrew Nativity School

Thanks for your comments and questions about why our council should support the St. Andrew Nativity School. I believe our Council should require a rational statement for all future financial donations. Here are some of my thoughts. First our Catholic faith requires us to reach out to those in need, both locally and beyond. There is no doubt that we should help St Clare and St. John Fisher Catholic schools. However, I feel we must also reach out to extremely poor communities beyond our local neighborhood. Here are some specific reasons I can share for why we also should support the St. Andrew Nativity School.

  1. The Nativity School is a newly recognized national model for Jesuits to broaden their focus beyond the "best and brightest" high school and college students to also include poor minority middle school children who might lack the inspiration, motivation, and dreams of becoming successful Catholic leaders. The Nativity School selects poor minority children and some from refugee families who would otherwise not have the resources to attend a Catholic middle school that can help form them in their faith and give the necessary educational background to gain scholarships to Catholic high schools and colleges. Having been an inner-city middle school teacher myself, I know the importance and challenges of working with minority students who would otherwise lack the skills of getting into a competitive private high school or college.
  2. Without a school like Nativity, many of these young minority boys and girls would be likely to drop out of high school and some would likely become gang members and end up in prison.
  3. The staff at Nativity School work to challenge students to become the best version of themselves while in grades 6 through 8 but also to work with families and children to prepare to get scholarships into good Catholic high schools and continue to monitor and guide them to get scholarships into colleges and/or vocational training.
  4. The Nativity School is sponsored by the Jesuits and is also one of the groups that Fr. Jim Galluzzo donates clothing and school supplies to.
  5. Many adults wonder why some neglected poor minority children go on to perform acts of violence and destruction in our cities. Rather than investing money on more prison space, why not do things to help prevent young people from such crime by giving them the encouragement and tools to become productive citizens.
  6. Three of our council members (Michael Chau, Oanh Nguyen and myself) have visited the school and participated in their annual fundraising lunch and have committed to making monthly donations to help the Nativity School. For a brief glimpse of what the school has done for its graduates I recommend you view the You Tube  Knights of Columbus John Clare Council #15485: Introducing St. Andrew Nativity School K (kofc15485.blogspot.com)
  7. In addition to my request for a Council financial donation to the Nativity School, we might also help publicize the needs of the school, gather children’s clothes and school supplies for the children, and become a model for other Oregon KC Councils to also consider supporting this school.

Please take the time to review this important information.

Life is Messy by Matthew Kelly (Current Knights Discussion Book - Part 6 Finale)

Hello Brother Knights,

At our next KofC meeting on Tuesday, July 19th we will be conclude the discussion on our book by Matthew Kelly Life is Messy with Part 6. Part 6 of the book will be starting with the chapter Change Something through the end chapter The good life (~pages 127-152). For those that do not have the book, you may still be able to pick one up at Church or contact me directly to have a copy delivered to you.

This book is about putting our lives back together, and allowing ourselves to be put back together, when life doesn’t turn out as we expected it to. Based on his own heart-wrenching personal journals, Matthew Kelly shares how the worst three years of his life affected him, by exploring this question: Can someone who has been broken be healed and become more beautiful and more lovable than ever before?

Here are some possible discussion questions that have been recommended for you to think on as you read the final and 6th part:

Question 1: Reflect on and discuss the lessons learned from “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.”
p.130-131.
  • What thoughts crossed your mind as you read the lyrics?
  • When did you last live a single day that reflects the wisdom of the rhyme?
  • Try living this way intentionally tomorrow.
Question 2: Matthew Kelly says that the essential ingredient of the good life is GOODNESS
itself.
  • How would your life change if your only goal was to do as much good as possible?

I hope we all “fill our life with love, kindness, gratitude, compassion, and generosity.”

Mater Dei Radio NEEDS Help from Knights

A Message from Scott Peterson, Grand Knight of Fr. Luke O'Donnell in Beaverton
-------------------------------
Brothers,

Peace of Christ to you!

Recently, Our Blessed Virgin Mary’s Radio station, KBVM, experienced several events that have impacted the station.  The heavy wet snow several months ago caused two trees to fall over with one damaging a retaining wall.  Additionally, the station had to install some pilings for a retaining wall after some construction on the property next door.  Jeff and Scott have repaired the large retaining wall and completed several other small items.  With Mater Dei Radio dealing with these unexpected expenses, the opportunity to provide assistance in the form of manpower has presented itself to the Knights.

On July 16, 2022, a work party will plant around one hundred small plants and trees, address a small retaining wall issue, line a drainage channel with rock and spread two units of bark dust.  Scott is seeking help from a number of councils and asking if three or four hard working Brother Knights can assist at the event.  We will start at 8:00 am and a tasty lunch will be provided by Mater Dei Radio.

The address of Mater Dei Radio is:  6249 SW Canyon Court, Portland, OR. 97221.

Parking is limited and overflow parking is available in front of the building located at 1750 SW Skyline Blvd.  The building is located on the corner of SW Skyline and SW Westgate Drive. We will need to coordinate a shuttle to facilitate the transfer of the Knights from the parking area to the radio station.  Please let Scott Petersen  know if and how many able bodied Knights can assist as I will need a head count for parking and lunch.

Thanks for your assistance with the station as some good old elbow grease will help the station prioritize its funds for other matters.
God love you!

Over the June 24 to 26 weekend, Mother and Child Education Center was a victim of vandalizing mobs, in response to the Dobbs vs Jackson Women's Health decision.  Mother and Child supports impoverished women in choosing to keep their children, they are the main 211 support service for the City of Portland, and in the wake of the Supreme Court Decision, even though abortion is still legal here, their client load is only going to go up.

Let's help them to repair this damage so that they can get back to helping connect young mothers to resources.
