June Mass Announcement

KofC Membership Blitz Mass Announcement for St. Clare's.

On Oct. 2, 1881, a group of men met in the basement of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut. Called together by their parish priest, Blessed Father Michael J. McGivney, these men formed a fraternal society that would one day become the world’s largest Catholic family fraternal service organization.

Blessed Father McGivney started the order because he was faced, over and over again, with prejudice against Catholicism and the breakup of families upon the loss of a job, illness, or death of the breadwinner.

Today, our Fathers in the Spirit are often taken for granted- left alone in their ministry. Today, in a culture that tells us fatherhood and men are unimportant and unnecessary, the Knights stand together in unity with our fellow fathers- both in the Holy Orders and in the Sacrament of Matrimony. Today, in a culture that tells us that some lives are worthless because of poverty, young parents, old age, or disability; the Knights stand in support of human life not only before birth, but from conception until natural death.

Here at St. Clare's- we have a strong group to emulate. Out of a small women's retreat a few years ago, the Sisters in the Spirit has not only continued the retreat, but now offers leadership in many of our parish ministries. While we men have had our twice-yearly mornings of reflection, we need to step up and do more.

Thus, the Knights of Columbus who are already in this parish and members of Tigard Council 3591, have started a roundtable to discuss how the Knights of Columbus can have more involvement in our parish- and encourage men to join in hopes of having our own council one day. You only have to be a “Practical Catholic Gentleman”- baptized in your Catholic Faith and over the age of 18.

I'm keeping the above as my speech for the Informational meeting. Per Sue Unger's request, I'm rewriting the below to be read as a part of the standard Mass Announcements.

[Saturday night final paragraph]Tigard Knights of Columbus Council 3591 has started a Knight's Roundtable to help organize men to volunteer at St. Clare's. If you are a Practical Catholic Gentleman over the age of 18, members of the Tigard Council will be available after Mass at the entrances to talk to you about becoming a Knight.

[Sunday morning final paragraph.]Tigard Knights of Columbus Council 3591 has started a Knight's Roundtable to help organize men to volunteer at St. Clare's. Come join us after Mass for a pancake breakfast put on by members of the Tigard Council, a freewill donation is requested with all profits going to the Next Generation Capital Campaign. Members of the Tigard Council will be busing tables and serving coffee, and would like to talk to any Practical Catholic Gentlemen over the age of 18 about becoming a Knight.
